Scam or fraud is one of the most prevalent security issues or problems anyone can fall prey to regardless of our age, sex, social status or exposures, and most at times we fall prey to the tricks of scammers not because we are not smart or experienced.

To this effect, the Intelligence and security unit of critical thinkers international(ISU-CTI) want to use this opportunity to educate Ghanaians and the general public on ways and methods each one of us can use to avoid being tricked or scammed.

Most fruadulent schemes are performed by dishonest individuals and organized crime groups in an attempt to dishonestly obtain money or any other valuables their innocent victims.

Research has shown that scams or fruadulent schemes traditionally resides or involves confidence tricks where a person or a scammer will misrepresent themselves with persons of good social standing or authority in the the society such as Doctor, Lawyers, clergy, investor, senior military officer or a philantrophist.


REASONS FRAUD OR SCAMMING OCCUR

GREED
Andy Stanley a well known public speaker once said and i quote; "Greed is not a financial issue, it is a heart issue".
Yes greed plays a vital reason why most victims fall prey to fraudulent schemes and tricks, and when an individual sees a chance to make fast cash, we become vulnerable to tricks and snares of scammers.

LACK OF TRANSPARENCY
As humans, we all want financial prosperity because of our uncontrolled craving for fast cash, this could lead us to complex financial transactions that might seem very difficult for us to comprehend.
This transactions could easily snare or trick us to fall prey to scammers or fraudulent schemes such as the Barings fraud case and the famous Pyramid schemes(the pyramid scheme is currently illegal in 46 countries).

COMMON SCAMS OR FRAUDULENT SCHEMES

FEE FRAUD
It has always being a common trend when we daily recieve e-mails and phone calls, typically a fraudster will ask you for a small fee or cash for taxes, legal documents before they can send you the supposed cash you are promised, in an actual sense you will never get such money.

OVERPAYMENT SCAM
This is one area we all need to watchout for, especially all mobile money users. In recent times, we mostly receive calls from people who claimed they have mistakenly paid some cash into your mobile money account or bank accounts, to this recent development Intelligence and security unit of critical thinkers international(ISU-CTI) wish to alert the general public of any strange calls from anyone who claims to have mistakenly paid some cash into our mobile money accounts to be on the watch because most of them are scams.

PRIZE WINNING SCAMS
Research has shown that alot of people fall easily to this fraudulent schemes due to over excitments of winning such fabulous prizes, most times victims are asked to pay a small processing or handling fees.

FRAUDULENT CHARITY
Scammers most often use disasters or fake charity organisational offers to trick victims, this usually occurs when there is refugee influx or civil unrest in a society.

The puzzling question is how can we protect ourselves from being scammed?
As individuals we need to follow steps that will guide our sense of security, and these steps will help us to protect ourselves and also help all security agencies to mitigate or fight against all fraudulent schemes.

WE NEED TO BE ALERT
When we are dealing with people online or during phone calls, we need to be alert considering all facts or the possibilities that the approach may be fraudulent. We also need to have in mind that if things or informations we get sounds or looks so good to be true, then it a scam.

KNOW YOUR ASSOCIATES
We need to carefully do a thorough background research on any potential business associate, this will help us have a clear understanding of the true legitimacy of the supposed business offers.

PROTECT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
It is popularly believed that "security is information and information is security"
Scammers or fraudsters take all informations seriously, as such we need to ensure all our emails, phones, all electronic devices need to be protected. We also need to choose our passwords carefully and to shred all unused documents.
